What a website design project involves

Websites we have designed and built for businesses — corporate sites, brand sites and the marketing sites that sit in front of a product. The brief varies enormously from one to the next; what does not vary is that the site has to load quickly on a phone, read clearly to someone who has never heard of the company, and be findable by the people looking for what it sells.

• Structure and page plan worked out before any design, so the site answers the questions buyers actually arrive with
• Design in the browser at real widths — phone first, because that is where most of the traffic is
• Hand-built front end, or a theme where the client wants to edit content themselves
• On-page SEO as part of the build: titles, headings, schema markup and internal links, not a task bolted on later
• Speed treated as a feature — compressed images, no framework loaded for the sake of it
