What a web application project involves

Applications rather than websites: systems with users, roles, permissions and a workflow that has to survive contact with the way a business really operates. These are the projects where the interesting problems are behind the screen — who is allowed to approve what, what happens when two people edit the same record, and what the numbers have to reconcile to at the end of the month.
